Muslim Leaders Meet Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, Claim Police Removing Loudspeakers From Mosques
Muslim leaders told Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar that police were removing mosque loudspeakers despite compliance with HC decibel limits. Pawar stressed adherence to permissible noise levels.

A group of Muslim leaders on Wednesday met Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, complaining that police were removing loudspeakers from mosques in the state.
NCP leader Nawab Malik told PTI that he, along with former AIMIM MLA Warris Pathan, his party legislator and daughter Sana Malik, Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi, and others, called on Deputy CM Ajit Pawar to raise their concerns. The meeting was held to discuss what they claimed was unjustified action being taken by the police against mosques that, according to them, were complying with legal sound norms.
The team informed the deputy chief minister that BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has been demanding the removal of loudspeakers from mosques. Following his demands and ongoing pressure, the police have reportedly started taking action on his complaints, which include the removal of loudspeakers from mosques across various locations in the state. The leaders expressed their dissatisfaction with this development and called for immediate intervention.
Pawar, during the meeting, responded that members of the public, including religious institutions, must follow the permissible decibel limits set by the Bombay High Court. He emphasized that police action should only be taken if these decibel limits are flouted.
However, the Muslim leaders present at the meeting argued that in many cases, loudspeakers were being removed from mosques despite the fact that they were operating within the sound limits as per the High Court’s order. They said this was causing unrest among the community.
Malik, whose party is a partner of the BJP and Shiv Sena in the ruling Mahayuti alliance, explained that the permissible sound level for loudspeakers is 55 decibels during the daytime and 45 decibels at night. Additionally, he noted that no loudspeakers are permitted between 10 PM and 6 AM, in line with the Bombay High Court ruling.
In April, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya had led a protest in Mumbai’s Mulund area, where he reiterated his demand for the removal of illegal loudspeakers from certain mosques. He claimed that the use of such loudspeakers contributes to noise pollution in nearby areas.
