A woman died in a hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut on Friday hours after giving birth while being shifted to a general room in an elevator. 30-year-old Karishma had given birth to a baby girl and was being taken to the general room from the operation theatre in a lift.

However, the elevator crashed as the belt snapped resulting in serious injuries to the woman on her head who later succumbed to it, reported NDTV.

The incident took place at the Capital Hospital in Meerut's Shastri Nagar area. The woman was being shifted on a stretcher inside the elevator. As the lift crashed, people stuck inside started shouting for help, leading to a commotion in the hospital.

Some tried to open the elevator but failed until a team of technicians came to rescue them.

The injured woman was taken to a different hospital but later died due to her injuries, said the police. The angry relatives of the victims vandalised the hospital prompting the doctors and staff to flee.

The cops rushed into the hospital from a police post located in front of the hospital and brought the situation under control.

The baby girl has been kept in the nursery of another hospital. The woman had been admitted to the hospital on Thursday morning for a cesarean delivery.

The doctor, manager, and staff of Capital Hospital have been booked at Lohia Nagar police station in Meerut.

Last month, six people were injured when a lift crashed at an apartment building in Hyderabad's Chandulal Baradari area. The incident took place when the lift suddenly malfunctioned and crashed, trapping six occupants inside, according to Telangana Today.

In October, an 11-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after the elevator he was in suddenly malfunctioned and collapsed inside the duct from the first floor. Three other occupants were also in the lift and escaped unhurt.
