A man in Maharashtra's Gondia district was arrested on Wednesday and sent to police remand for allegedly killing his pregnant 18-year-old girlfriend and burning her half-naked body.
The accused, identified as 38-year-old Shakeel Mustafa Siddiqui, reportedly strangled his girlfriend and then set her body on fire at a secluded place in a forest area in Gondia district. The duo were in a relationship for some time but Shakeel wanted to end it after the girl, who has not been identified, got pregnant. She wanted to stay with him, India Today reported citing police.
Police station in-charge Ajay Bhusari reached the spot along with his team after receiving the information about the incident. Upon reaching, they found a half-naked body lying in the field, which was completely burnt. Thereafter, an investigation was launched and the accused was traced within hours. He was then presented in court and awarded a police remand to the accused.
The investigation of the case has been handed over to the local crime branch and Goregaon police. The senior officers instructed the formation of different teams to identify the unidentified girl and discover the reason behind her murder. Shakeel later confessed to his crime during the investigation, the report said citing police inspector Ajay Bhusari.
During questioning, the accused confessed that he killed his girlfriend by strangling her and then burning her body. He revealed she was pregnant with his child and, that he hatched a conspiracy to get rid of her since she wanted to live with him.
As per the conspiracy, Shakeel called the girl to the field of Devutola on February 10, where he strangled her with a dupatta. Thereafter, he covered her body with a sheet and straw and set it ablaze to destroy evidence, the senior cop added.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
