Kolkata: Mother-Daughter Duo Caught Dumping Suitcase With Woman's Body In Hooghly River, Claimed It To Be Pet Dog
In Kolkata, a mother-daughter duo was caught trying to dump a suitcase containing a relative's body into the Hooghly River. Locals alerted the police, who identified the deceased as Sumita Ghosh.

In a shocking incident in north Kolkata’s Ahiritola, a mother and daughter duo was caught red-handed on Tuesday while allegedly attempting to dump a suitcase containing human body parts into the Hooghly River. Locals became suspicious and intervened, leading to the discovery of a corpse inside the bag, police said.
According to police, the women arrived at the Ahiritola Ghat in a taxi and were seen dragging a heavy blue trolley bag towards the river. "The women claimed that the bag contained the corpse of their pet dog, but we found a human body in it. We immediately informed the police," a local eyewitness told news agency PTI.
Officers from the North Port police station arrived at the scene and took the two women into custody for questioning. "We are questioning them. We are also speaking to the locals who spotted them while they attempted to throw the trolley bag into the river," a police officer said, as per PTI. The body parts have been sent for post-mortem examination, he added.
“The women were evasive and refused to let anyone touch the suitcase,” Raja Sau, who runs the yoga camp, told NDTV. “They first claimed it contained the body of their pet Labrador. But how much can a Labrador weigh? Thirty or forty kilos? Even then, two people should have been able to carry it.”
Kolkata Police Find Woman's Body In Suitcase, Deceased Identified As Aunt-In-Law Of One Of The Accused
As the exchange went on for nearly half an hour, a crowd of over 50 people gathered. Under pressure, one of the women changed her story, claiming the bag contained the body of her sister-in-law, who had died by suicide. “If that was the case, why were they trying to dispose of it this way? One takes such a body to the hospital or calls the police,” Sau added, as per NDTV's report.
The locals alerted a neighbourhood policeman, who called in reinforcements. Upon arrival, the police forced open the suitcase, uncovering the body of a woman wrapped in bloodstained clothes. The deceased was identified as Sumita Ghosh, aunt-in-law of one of the accused.
The two women—Falguni Ghosh and her mother, Aarati Ghosh—were arrested on the spot. Initial reports suggested they had travelled by train from Kazipara to Kumartuli, as a train ticket was recovered from them. However, police later obtained CCTV footage from Madhyamgram, near Kolkata, showing them transporting the suitcase in a cart before taking a taxi directly to Kumartuli, the report stated.
According to sources cited by NDTV, the accused mother and daughter had been living in a rented house in Madhyamgram for over two years. Locals claimed they kept to themselves, though strangers were seen visiting the house at night. A few days before the incident, a woman was reportedly seen entering the house at night, but no further details were known.
Meanwhile, police faced protests from residents demanding increased security in the area.
