Disappointed with the CBI investigation, the parents of the doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital expressed heartbreak over the release on bail of the two key suspects in the case. They said it seemed like the "system" was failing them.
A Kolkata court granted bail to the ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, and the former officer-in-charge of Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet within the mandatory 90-day period.
"We thought the CBI would speed up the investigation and bring those responsible to justice. But now, with the accused being granted bail, it feels like the system is failing us," said the victim's mother, whose body was found in the hospital on August 9, news agency PTI reported. "Every day, we wonder if this will be another case in which the powerful escape without punishment," she added.
"We are very disappointed that CBI did not file chargesheet in 90 days. CBI did not work and hence those people got bail. This is very disappointing," she told ANI.
Mondal, the arrested police officer, was accused of delaying the FIR filing, while Ghosh faces charges of tampering with evidence. Resulting in the arrest of both the accused by the CBI.
Sandip Ghosh To Remain In Custody
Speaking to news agency PTI outside the court, Mondal's lawyer stated that soon he will be released from judicial custody. Further, the lawyer added that Ghosh is also an accused in a separate case of financial irregularities at the RG Kar hospital. As a result, he will have to remain in custody despite the bail in the rape-murder case.
"We are heartbroken. We trusted the CBI to deliver justice, but now we are left wondering if we will ever see justice for our daughter," said the father of the victim.
Alleging the CBI of ignoring this case and taking it causally, BJP leader Agnimitra Paul told news agency ANI, "It is very unfortunate and quite shameful. We are extremely upset by the way the case of Abhaya is being solved. I am not sure what agenda these few officers of the CBI have. Why are they not submitting the chargesheet at the right time? This is not an ordinary case. It is being looked at by 10 crore people of the state. The court had assured the parents of Abhaya that if they felt that the CBI was not going ahead with the case properly, they could submit an appeal in the court. West Bengal BJP stands with the parents of Abahaya and we will do whatever is required. We will not tolerate this."
The rape and murder of the on-duty doctor sparked widespread protests across West Bengal, prompting the Calcutta High Court to intervene and transfer the case to the CBI.
