Heavy Rains Lash Delhi-NCR
A fierce overnight thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall battered Delhi late Saturday, leading to widespread disruption across the city, including waterlogging, uprooted trees, damaged electric poles, and significant delays at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
The sudden weather shift brought a sharp dip in temperature, offering respite from the prevailing heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a minimum temperature of 19.8°C, nearly 7 degrees below normal.
Safdarjung recorded gusts up to 82 kmph and 81.2 mm of rain within a six-hour period from 11:30 pm to 5:30 am. Other rain measurements included 68.1 mm at Palam, 71 mm at Pusa, 48 mm at Mayur Vihar, 30 mm at Narela, and 29 mm at Delhi University.
The high winds and downpour caused waterlogging in multiple low-lying areas. Commuters faced difficulties in regions like Moti Bagh, Minto Road, ITO, Dhaula Kuan, Delhi Cantonment, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, and Chanakyapuri. Viral videos on social media showed vehicles, including a bus and a car, nearly submerged in flooded underpasses, particularly near Delhi Cantonment and Minto Road.
The IMD had earlier issued a red alert warning of an approaching thunderstorm system from the west and northwest. The advisory predicted severe thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Palam reported wind speeds of 72 kmph, Pragati Maidan 76 kmph, Jafarpur 61 kmph, and IGNOU 50 kmph.
IMD's Sunday Forecast For Delhi
The IMD has predicted more rain and thunderstorms for Sunday, with the maximum temperature expected to hover around 38°C. Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors during intense weather spells and avoid flooded areas.
