Farmers protesting at the Shambhu border were met with tear gas and water cannons as they attempted to march towards Delhi.
The protesting farmers at the Shambhu border were met with tear gas and water canons on Saturday as they sought to march from the Punjab-Haryana border towards Delhi to press forward their demands.
Visuals from the Shambhu border showed police spraying tear gas and water canons over the farmers through heavy steel barricades.
A group of 101 farmers started their march from the Shambhu border but were stopped by police personnel who launched action against the protestors leading to tensions at the protest site. The authorities maintained their position and cited security concerns and the need to control the movement into Delhi to stop the farmers.

Blocked by the police, farmers requested the security forces to allow them to continue their protest in a peaceful manner. "SP Sahab, we want to march to Delhi peacefully, we request you to not block our protest, please give us the," a farmer leader at the protest site requested the police speaking through the barricades.
"We should be allowed to move ahead. Our voice should not be suppressed by these iron and stone barriers," the farmer leader said.
Responding to the appeals by protestors, Ambala Superintendent of Police said to take proper permission to go to Delhi. "once you get the permission, we will allow you to go. There was a hearing in the Supreme Court yesterday. Instructions have been given to hold a meeting," the police official said.
"The next date of the meeting is December 18. We appeal to you to sit here peacefully and follow the rules," he added.
Earlier in the day, to prevent any law and order situation, internet services were suspended in parts of Ambala till December 17.
