Delhi Metro Fare To Be Hiked? Here's What DMRC Says

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has denied any possibility of a Metro fare hike immediately, stating that fares can only be revised by an independent government-appointed panel.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has clarified that there would be no hike in fares in the immediate future. The DMRC was replying to several social media posts that claimed that after the recent Bengaluru Metro (Namma Metro) fare hike, commuting by the Delhi Metro would also be costlier.

"This is in reference to some social media posts claiming that Delhi Metro fares have been revised. Delhi Metro's fares can only be revised by an independent Fare Fixation Committee which is nominated by the Government. Presently there is no such proposal for the constitution of any Fare Fixation Committee," the DMRC said in a social media post.

Earlier on February 8, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) hiked the fare on Namma Metro by up to 50%. The BMRCL defended its decision to raise the fares saying: "BMRCL revised fares after over 6 years due to rising costs and loan repayment of Rs 10,422 crore." It further said that discounts on off-peak hours, Sundays, and holidays would continue.

The Namma Metro fare was hiked within a month of the BJP claiming that the plan to raise the ticket prices had been put on hold by PM Narendra Modi. He said that PM Modi had sought a report before revision of fares and called it a "big win" for the people of Bengaluru.
