34 Dead As Floods, Landslides Wreak Havoc In Northeast; Air Force, Army Carry Rescue Ops

Over 1,200 tourists are stranded, and rescue operations are underway. The central government has pledged assistance, and Assam is providing compensation to victims' families.

At least 34 people have died in floods and landslides in the Northeastern states of Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and others in the last three days. 

The Air Force and the Assam Rifles have been carrying out rescue operations in these states, reported NDTV. 

Over 1,200 tourists were stranded in north Sikkim and evacuation slated for Sunday was stalled due to a fresh landslide. Eight tourists who went missing after their car was tossed into Teesta River have also been not found yet.

Meghalaya, Tripura, Assam Affected 

In Meghalaya, flash floods and landslides have impacted 10 districts while more than 10,000 people have been affected in Tripura. 

In Assam, 3.6 lakh people in 764 villages across 19 districts have been affected by flash floods. On Sunday, two more deaths were reported taking the tally of flood and landslide to 10.

The rivers are also swelled with the Brahmaputra flowing above the danger mark in Dibrugarh, and Neematighat among other places. Five other rivers are also flowing above the danger level. 

Over 10,000 people have shifted to relief camps.

Shah Speaks To CMs

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh and the Governor of Manipur. He has assured the CMs of all the possible assistance from the Centre to tackle the situation. 

Taking to X, Shah said, "Spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh and the Governor of Manipur in the wake of ongoing heavy rainfall in their states. Also assured them of every possible help to tackle any situation. The Modi government stands like a rock in support of the people of the Northeast." 

The Assam government has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the victims, said minister Jayanta Mallabaruah.
